Event description
As teachers from a diverse range of disciplines, how can we foster classrooms wherein conventional notions of disability are interrupted and re-imagined?
In this 90 minute session, you will be invited to participate in a discussion about unpacking and engaging with notions of disability in the post-secondary classroom.
Maria Bee Christensen-Stryno and Tobin LeBlanc Haley will draw on their own experiences in the classroom to critically engage with how questions of disability complicate, enrich and create new possibilities in Communication Studies and Political Economy Studies, respectively.
Participants will then be invited to consider where disability is located in their own areas of expertise and teaching and to identify those spaces where engaging with disability scholarship and its tools for action can offer new opportunities for students (and faculty) to think critically about embodied difference.
Facilitators:
- Maria Bee Christensen-Stryno, doctoral candidate in Communication Studies at Roskilde University, Denmark and visiting scholar in the School of Disability Studies at Ryerson University
- Tobin LeBlanc Haley, Ethel Louise Armstrong postdoctoral fellow in the School of Disability Studies at Ryerson University
